Description

In the far north west of Namibia lies possibly one of the remotest and least inhabited places on Earth. Kaokoland is home to the ethnic group known as the Himba, but I came here in search of the Lone Men of Kaokoland. They are not marked on any map and blend seamlessly into the landscape making them, difficult to spot. The Lone men have been wired together using small rocks found in the area by artist, Trevor Nott and each of them has a small tag on them with their number and a small caption. Seen here is Lone man # 5 who says – “ Enough lounging, I need to keep moving”.  Rumoured to be in excess of about 40 men of stone, I could discover only 18 of them, during my adventures in Kaokoland. The rest await me and for my next trip into the area …..

The clear skies in the area result in excellent seeing conditions and one can see many southern sky goodies such as the Carina Nebula and The Running Chicken nebula resolved to reasonable details for a widefield image. The Coal sack nebula and the dust clouds are represented too and if one looks closely enough, one can see the Gabriela Mistral nebula and numerous star clusters. The Southern Cross stands guard over the proceedings.

A long exposure of the running man of stone was taken before being light painted and blended in Photoshop. The tripod was then moved for a clear view of the horizon for blending to be easier. The Carina arm of the milky way was tracked and a stack of 8 images was imaged and more exposures of the sky were taken using an H-alpha filter to bring out the nebulosity. A fog filter adds glow to the stars. Care was taken to ensure the azimuth altitude and focal length of the sky matched the foreground. Clouds, haze and glow were added at the horizon to make a smooth transition between ground and sky.
